We ran into an issue with this release really late in the cycle, so it may be delayed till later on Tuesday

Basically, Google App Engine limits any single operation to 30 seconds, which means that a contact sync with lots of contacts and images could take way more than 30 seconds and thus fail. To further complicate things, there are certain contacts that will have an image URL, but fetching their images will still fail. We have to work around these issues to make sure syncing contacts will not affect your experience much, so please be patient while we devise a better solution.
